Sesquicentennial Mural
The Sesquicentennial themed mural was the first mural to be created through the Streetscape Mural Program.

Randy Halverson and his trompe l’ouel design for the Sesquicentennial mural were selected by the committee after an in depth review process. Randy was born and raised in DeKalb and is currently the CEO of Serene Studios, Inc. Randy has done in depth work for Taylor Studios, Inc and has painted murals of all size and variations across the country.  

Randy’s mural, entitled “Communiversity,” celebrates DeKalb's Sesquicentennial with faces from the past and present in DeKalb and gives a strong look to the future.  There are actual historical and current day faces included as well as representations of a variety of diverse figures whom have contributed to DeKalbs History featured on the balcony that will over look the downtown.  The actual likenesses include; Baron DeKalb, President Abraham Lincoln, Clinton Rosette, Northern Illinois University Football Coach, Joe Novak, NIU track star “Bumpy Smith” and Ruth Swanson a citizen of DeKalb in 1907.

The following is a segment of Mr. Halverson’s artist statement regarding his mural design:

" DeKalb celebrates its one hundred and fiftieth year as a community that has thrived on the diversity of its people. Working together as a diverse community is what has made DeKalb such a great place to live and is what will make the next one hundred and fifty years continue to develop and prosper."

The mural was painted on an aluminite substrate and placed on the east side of Eduardo’s Restaurant located at 214 East Lincoln Highway. The elevated portion of the east facing façade over looks Lincoln Highway and is visible to west bound travelers.
